A Great Place to See the Light

Situated in Michigan's beautiful eastern Upper Peninsula, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society and the Museum complex has been termed "world class." Winner of the Michigan Governor's Award for the top cultural organization in Michigan, two Michigan Emmy Awards for program productions, the first-ever Upper Peninsula Cultural Anchor Organization awarded by the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs are a few examples of our professional accomplishments.

Practically surrounded by Lake Superior shoreline, we are located about an hour north of the Mackinac Bridge and only 20 minutes from the mighty Tahquamenon Falls. Whitefish Point is an ideal destination for young and old alike.

USA Today article, "Ten Great Places to See the Light" included Whitefish Point Light Station in its selection of ten of the best lighthouse destinations in the country.

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is the only one of its kind dedicated to the perils and heroism of maritime transport on the Great Lakes. The Shipwreck Museum and historic buildings on site are fittingly co-located with the oldest active Light Station on Lake Superior. For more than 150 years, this unique iron pile Light Tower ordered by President Lincoln has guided thousands of ships running before the storm along the infamous Shipwreck Coast to safe harbor in Whitefish Bay. The Light today still shows the way to safe harbor, escaping the fury of “the Father of all Lakes” ...the title used by Native Hurons when they introduced the first European explorer, Entienne Brule, to Lake Superior about 1617.

Something for Everyone!

Throughout the museum gallery you will see dramatic shipwreck legends come to life. Artifacts and exhibits tell the stories of sailors and ships who braved the waters of Lake Superior and those who were lost to menacing waves. One of our most popular exhibits is the Edmund Fitzgerald memorial featuring the Ships Bell. Throughout your site tour you will experience captivating history and the human drama of our maritime heritage.

After leaving the museum gallery, tour the Lighthouse Keeper's Quarters completely restored and appointed to its turn of the century appearance and staffed with historical interpreters. Two other buildings on site, the Coast Guard Lifesaving Crews Quarters and the Boat House, have also been fully restored to their original condition and we are presently working on restoration of the Fog Signal Building.

The Shipwreck Theater shows a 15 minute video which takes visitors to the depths of Lake Superior to discover the wrecksite of the Edmund Fitzgerald. To help with your scheduling or if you wish more time exploring the site, we also offer the video to be viewed on the coach. Many operators request the video in advance of their visit to show while enroute to Whitefish Point. The escort may also take a copy with them to show after visiting.

Visitors gain access to Lake Superior's shore via a newly constructed boardwalk. The beautiful rocky beach is great for agate hunting or a peaceful stroll. End your visit by stopping in the best museum store in the Midwest featuring maritime art, limited edition prints, fine apparel, unique nauticals and hundreds of items for the entire family.

We offer itinerary planning assistance and complementary enrichment presentations for each visiting group when requested.
